Description
Our Ranch Elderberry plants are an excellent choice for challenging growing conditions. This semi-spur-bearing variety produces abundant fruit on compact, upright plants that stay manageable at 5-6′ tall—making harvest easy without a ladder.
What makes Ranch special: Extremely tolerant of non-fertile soils and drought conditions. Upright growth habit rather than bushy, making maintenance simpler. Pest- and disease-resistant, particularly effective in the Northeast region. Highly productive despite compact size.
Growing Details:
- Hardy zones 3-9
- Ripens in late August/early September
- Requires a pollinator (any other elderberry variety works)
- Preferred soil pH: 5.5-6.5
- Grows well in loamy soil, tolerates soil variation
- Full sun
- Compact height: 5-6′ tall
- Bird netting recommended two weeks before ripening
Important Safety Note: Elderberries must be cooked before consumption. Consuming fresh elderberries can be toxic. Please ensure all berries are properly prepared before use.
